"In this painting, I felt is was important not to break the serene and placid mood with the presence of the orcas. With that goal in mind, I took special care not to create too much turbulence in the water from these massive creatures. I wanted the whales to glide effortlessly through the painting. This is more a painting of a setting and a mood than it is a painting of orcas. The only sounds a viewer might hear are the distant cries of sea gulls and the forceful clearing of blowholes.

 

"Orcas and wolves have suffered similarly undeserved reputations. Orcas, in fact have often been referred to as "sea wolves." The legend of the orca, also like that of the wolf, tells a story of a formidable predator. Orcas are, indeed, the ultimate marine predators, hunting in organized groups called pods, but they have been unjustly feared and misunderstood. With more research and experience, orcas have been found to be highly intelligent and gentle." - Daniel Smith.
