"Some watercolors are difficult to paint because of the time involved ...Then there are paintings that are pure watercolors. They take such advantage of the medium that they couldn't be  painted with anything but watercolor, such as this painting. The concept was simple and the painting time minimal, but all of the judgement, emotion and skill needed to make a watercolor had to be working all at once in a nerve-racking 20 minutes instead of four weeks or four months. For an artist, it's a bit like diving off a high board as there is no turning back.

 

As the subject matter required two large washes of color to react with each other, the timing was crucial, and the humidity in the air had to be just right. All of it seemed to be pure luck, and the painting to be magically painting itself. I enjoy painting all types of watercolors, but the lucky ones are like receiving a gift." - Nita Engle.
