Less recognized is that the book itself was patterned in significant part on the early artistic career of an Englishman named Peter Scott who once lived in a lighthouse located on the marshy southeast coast of England and painted waterfowl. We had the pleasure of meeting Sir Peter in 1983 and enjoyed his account of how the Gallico book came about.
